The OSG 2926408 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers extended tool life in demanding production and maintenance environments. The tap cuts a 5/16-24 UNF right-hand thread with a 45-degree helix angle and a modified bottoming chamfer, making it well suited for threading holes close to the bottom of a blind bore. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics install this tap in manual tapping equipment, CNC machining centers, or drill press setups.
The OSG 2926408 is appropriate for threading operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows thread engagement closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard taper chamfer, making it useful in fixture machining, tooling fabrication, and repair work where full thread depth is required in a confined bore depth. The Series 290 designation places it within OSG's standard spiral flute tap family for general-purpose and precision threading applications.
Designed for use with 5/16-24 UNF thread applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Fits standard tap holders and chucks accepting a 0.255-inch shank diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using manual tap wrenches, tapping arms, or CNC rigid-tapping programs. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole diameter is correct for a 5/16-24 UNF H2 thread before starting. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material; do not run dry in stainless or hardened steel. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace at the first sign of thread-form degradation.
