The OSG 2917508 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of metals. Manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS) and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers extended tool life and reduced friction in demanding tapping operations. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole while still providing controlled thread lead-in. With a 45-degree helix angle and right-hand spiral flute geometry, chips are efficiently pulled up and out of the hole during cutting. Overall length is 1.875 inches, and the shank diameter is 0.141 inches. This tap is intended for use by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working with precision thread applications.
The OSG 2917508 is suited for tapping blind and through holes requiring 6-32 UNC threads at 32 threads per inch. Its material application range includes alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel, making it appropriate for both production machining environments and maintenance repair operations. The TiCN coating provides added hardness and heat resistance, extending service intervals when tapping abrasive or work-hardening materials. Thread limit is H7, supporting controlled oversize tolerance for plated or close-tolerance applications.
Designed for cutting 6-32 UNC threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 290 spiral flute tap line.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench, tapping fixture, or CNC/manual machine spindle with appropriate tap holder. Always ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 6-32 UNC threads before tapping. Apply cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material, especially when working with stainless or hardened steel. Secure the workpiece firmly and maintain proper axial alignment to avoid tap breakage.
