The OSG 2890608 is a spiral point tap designed for threading operations in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a plug chamfer, three flutes, and a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating over a high-speed steel-E (HSS-E) substrate. The TiCN coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction, extending tool life in demanding threading applications. With a D4 thread limit and right-hand thread direction, this tap is suited for through-hole tapping where the spiral point action pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone. Overall length is approximately 2.126 inches with a thread length of approximately 0.327 inches and a shank diameter of approximately 0.168 inches. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is rated for use in aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron. It is well suited for production threading in machine shop environments where a variety of workpiece materials are encountered on the same tooling setup. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in that distributes cutting forces across several threads, making it appropriate for both CNC tapping centers and manual machines with a tapping head. It is not designed for blind-hole applications where chip evacuation forward is not possible.

This tap should be installed in a properly sized tap holder or tapping chuck that matches the square drive dimension. Before use, verify that the spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and tap diameter. Apply cutting fluid or tapping compound suitable for the material being threaded to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use and replace if cutting edge integrity is compromised.
