The OSG 2868100 is a bottoming-style thread forming tap designed for M3x0.50 metric coarse threads with a 6H class of fit. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap forms internal threads by displacing material rather than cutting it, resulting in stronger thread geometry and no chip production. It is suited for use in blind hole threading applications where full thread engagement near the bottom of a hole is required. The overall length is 1.969 inches (50.00 mm) with a thread length of 0.236 inches (6.00 mm), making it compact and precise for tight-tolerance metric work. Trade machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users.
The OSG 2868100 is intended for blind hole threading in steel and non-ferrous metals, following the OSG HY-PRO NRT series design. The bottoming chamfer of 1.5 to 2 threads allows the tap to engage threads as close to the bottom of a hole as possible, making it the correct choice when full thread depth is critical and a plug or taper tap cannot reach. It is well suited to production and maintenance machining environments where M3 metric threads are specified in tight-clearance assemblies.
Designed for M3x0.50 metric coarse blind hole threading applications in steel and non-ferrous metals, per the OSG HY-PRO NRT series. Suitable for use with standard M3 tapping drill sizes where a 6H thread tolerance is specified.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming drill rather than a standard tap drill; consult metric forming drill charts for the correct pre-hole diameter before use. Power down all equipment and secure the workpiece before beginning tapping operations. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil to reduce friction and extend tap life, particularly in steel applications. This tap is intended for use by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with metric thread standards and CNC or manual tapping procedures.
