The OSG 2865208 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Unlike cutting taps, this bottoming-style forming tap displaces material rather than cutting chips, producing strong, work-hardened threads with no swarf buildup in the hole. It carries an 8-32 UNC thread form at a 2B class of fit and features a TiCN coating over a high-speed steel body. The bottoming chamfer provides 1.5 to 2 thread lead, allowing threads to be formed close to the bottom of a blind hole. Qualified machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and HVAC or mechanical service professionals working with tapped assemblies use this tap in production and repair contexts.
The 2865208 is suited for blind hole threading applications in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The bottoming geometry makes it well-matched for applications where thread depth close to the floor of a blind hole is required and chip evacuation is a concern. The right-hand thread direction and standard 8-32 UNC form make it a direct fit for common fastener specifications found across HVAC equipment assemblies, electrical enclosures, and general mechanical fabrication.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes — consult a forming tap drill chart before drilling. Apply an appropriate tapping lubricant or cutting fluid matched to the workpiece material before starting. Clamp the workpiece securely and maintain axial alignment throughout the tapping operation to avoid tap breakage or thread distortion. Inspect the tap for wear or coating damage before each use, particularly when working in steel.
