The OSG 2831608 is a spiral point plug tap designed for right-hand threading in a 3/8-16 UNC configuration. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and lubricity compared to uncoated tooling. It carries a 3B class of fit and an H3 thread limit, making it suitable for close-tolerance through-hole tapping operations. The 3-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, keeping the flutes clear during tapping. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians use this tap in production and repair applications across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
The OSG 2831608 is suited for tapping through holes in aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The TiCN coating extends tool life particularly in abrasive materials such as stainless steel and alloy steel. The plug chamfer style requires some thread lead-in clearance, making it the standard choice for through-hole applications rather than blind holes requiring a bottoming tap. It fits manual tapping handles and CNC tapping chucks sized for the 0.381-inch shank diameter.
Designed for right-hand through-hole tapping of 3/8-16 UNC threads in aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron. Fits standard tapping attachments and holders accepting a 0.381-inch shank diameter.
A licensed machinist or qualified maintenance technician should ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured before tapping. Power down or de-energize any machine spindle before loading or changing taps. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to maximize tap life and thread quality. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use and replace if cutting edges are degraded.
