The OSG 2812401 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. It features a plug chamfer, 2-flute geometry, and a steam oxide coating applied over vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) construction. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. The H3 thread limit provides a controlled fit for 2B class-of-fit threads. Overall length is 2 inches with a thread length of approximately 0.37 inches. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is intended for through-hole tapping of 6-32 UNC threads across a broad range of materials. Documented material applications include aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron. It is used in production machining, maintenance and repair operations, and fabrication environments where a 2B class fit is required. The right-hand thread direction is standard for the vast majority of fastener applications.
Designed for use in any standard tap holder, tapping head, or CNC rigid-tapping setup that accepts a shank diameter of 0.141 inches and is configured for 6-32 UNC thread form.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a properly aligned tap holder or tapping head to prevent tap breakage. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and that a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound is applied before and during the operation, even though the oxide coating provides modest built-in lubricity. Never apply side pressure to the tap during entry; allow the spiral point geometry to self-feed axially. For machine tapping, confirm that spindle speed and feed rate are set appropriately for the workpiece material before engaging the cut.
