The OSG 2293601 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading M20x2.50 metric coarse holes in a wide range of ferrous materials. It features a 45-degree helix angle and four flutes that channel chips up and out of the hole, making it well-suited for blind-hole applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threads to be cut close to the bottom of a hole. Ground to a 6H class of fit, this tap produces threads within standard metric tolerance for most fastener and assembly requirements. The vanadium high-speed steel construction with a steam oxide coating improves lubricity and helps resist wear during production runs. Overall length is 5.512 inches with a 0.652-inch shank diameter.
This tap is used in machine shop, maintenance, and production environments where M20x2.50 metric coarse internal threads are required. It is appropriate for use on alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it a practical choice when threading into blind holes where thread depth is critical. It is typically run in CNC machining centers, knee mills, or drill presses with tapping attachments, and does not require coolant-through capability. Series 229 designation identifies it within the OSG tapping product line.
Designed for cutting M20x2.50 metric coarse internal threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. OSG Series 229 spiral flute tap.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists in machine shop or industrial maintenance settings. Before tapping, confirm the correct tap drill diameter is used for the M20x2.50 thread form and that the workpiece is securely fixtured. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Apply consistent feed pressure and avoid reversing under load to prevent tap breakage.
