The OSG 2292301 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting M12x1.75 metric coarse internal threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and chip evacuation in blind-hole applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a hole compared to standard plug or taper styles. With a 45-degree helix angle and three right-hand flutes, this tap is well suited for production threading in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals on CNC machining centers, lathes, and tapping machines.
This tap is intended for blind-hole threading operations where chip control is critical. The spiral flute geometry pulls chips up and out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing and tap breakage. It is appropriate for use in both low- and high-volume production environments across automotive, tooling, and general metalworking applications. The 6H class of fit produces standard metric tolerance threads compatible with commercial fasteners. The 110 mm overall length accommodates standard tapping chucks and holders used in most machine shop setups.
Designed for threading alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Fits standard tapping chucks and holders sized for a 0.141 inch shank diameter. OSG Series 229.
Install in a rigid tapping chuck or floating tap holder appropriate for the machine type in use. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned with the drilled hole before engaging the spindle. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to maximize tap life and thread quality. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, especially when threading hardened or stainless steel.
