The OSG 2290801 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal M5x0.80 metric coarse threads in a wide range of ferrous metals. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, it delivers controlled chip evacuation through a 45-degree helix angle and three right-hand flutes. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. At 2.756 inches overall length with a 0.194-inch shank diameter, this tap fits standard tap holders and chucks used in machining and maintenance applications. It is manufactured to a 6H class of fit, meeting common tolerance requirements for metric fastener assemblies.
This tap is suited for threading operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The spiral flute design pulls chips up and out of the hole during cutting, making it particularly effective in blind-hole applications where chip packing is a concern. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working with M5 metric fasteners in production or repair settings will find this tap appropriate for both machine tapping and CNC applications.
Designed for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring M5x0.80 metric coarse internal threads.
This tap should be installed by a machinist or qualified technician in a properly aligned tap holder, tapping head, or CNC spindle to prevent tap breakage from misalignment. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for M5x0.80 before starting. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Never reverse the tap without first clearing chips to avoid binding or breakage.
