The OSG 2290401 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting M3x0.50 metric coarse internal threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap delivers reliable cutting performance and improved chip evacuation in blind-hole applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a hole than standard plug or taper taps. With a 45-degree helix angle and 3 flutes, the tool pulls chips up and out of the hole efficiently, reducing the risk of chip packing and tap breakage in harder materials.
This tap is suited for machine tapping operations in toolrooms, production shops, and maintenance environments where M3x0.50 threads are required. The 6H class of fit produces threads within standard tolerance for general-purpose metric fastener applications. At 56 millimeters overall length with a thread length of 4.1 millimeters, it fits standard tap holders and CNC rigid tapping setups. It is appropriate for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces.
Designed for cutting M3x0.50 metric coarse right-hand threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Fits tap holders and collets accepting a shank diameter of 0.168 inches.
This tap should be installed and operated by machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with tapping feeds, speeds, and torque limits for M3 taps. Always secure the workpiece and use the appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before beginning the threading operation. Ensure the spindle or tap wrench is properly aligned with the pre-drilled hole to prevent tap breakage. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, particularly when working in hardened or stainless steel.
