The OSG 2232201 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting internal 7/16-20 UNF right-hand threads in a variety of ferrous metals. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The 45-degree helix angle pulls chips up and out of the hole during cutting, which is the defining advantage of a spiral flute design. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Three flutes provide a balance of chip clearance and tool strength at this thread size. Overall length is 3.937 inches. Licensed machinists and maintenance mechanics are the primary installers.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance machining environments where blind-hole tapping is required in ferrous and alloy materials. The 2B class of fit delivers a standard commercial thread tolerance appropriate for the majority of mechanical fastening applications. The 45-degree spiral flute geometry makes it particularly effective in CNC tapping cycles and in hand-tapping setups where chip evacuation in a blind hole is a concern. No coolant-through capability is present, so flood or brush-applied cutting fluid should be used at the spindle or by hand.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct equivalent for 7/16-20 UNF modified bottoming spiral flute taps in the OSG Series 220 product line.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance mechanics using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle. The workpiece should be secured and the drill press or machining center spindle should be stopped and locked out before changing or inspecting the tap. Apply cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material before tapping, and maintain proper tap alignment to avoid thread distortion or breakage. No coolant-through passages are present on this tap, so external cutting fluid application is required.
