The OSG 1983001 is a spiral point plug tap designed for through-hole threading in metric fine applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a steam oxide coating, this tap cuts a M14x1.25 thread profile using a 3-flute, right-hand configuration. The plug chamfer style eases entry into the workpiece and allows the tap to be driven at consistent feed rates in production and job-shop environments. With a thread length of 1-21/32 inches (25 millimeters) and an overall length of 91 millimeters, it fits standard tapping heads and CNC tool holders sized for the 10.89-millimeter shank. This tap is intended for use by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians performing metric fine threading operations.
The OSG 1983001 is suited for through-hole threading in low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. It performs well in both manual and CNC tapping setups where a plug chamfer entry and spiral point chip-forward action are preferred. The D5 thread limit designation makes it appropriate for standard tolerance fits common in automotive, general manufacturing, and maintenance-repair applications. Coolant-through capability is not included, so external flood or mist cooling should be applied when cutting ferrous materials at elevated speeds.
Designed for through-hole threading applications requiring an M14x1.25 metric fine thread. Material applications listed by the manufacturer include low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metal.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping speeds and feeds for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece fully before beginning the tapping operation and ensure proper alignment to prevent tap breakage. Apply cutting fluid or external coolant appropriate for the material being threaded. Do not reverse the tap without disengaging the drive to avoid damaging the thread form or breaking the tap in the hole.
