The OSG 1982001 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal metric coarse threads in through-hole applications. It features a plug chamfer, 2-flute geometry, and a D3 thread limit with a 6H class of fit, making it suitable for general-purpose tapping where controlled thread tolerance is required. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating that provides mild lubricity and corrosion resistance during use. With an overall length of 44.5 mm and a thread length of 7/16 inches, this tap is dimensioned for standard machine tapping setups. It is installed and operated by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance trades working with tapping heads, CNC machines, or hand-operated tapping equipment.
This tap is designed for right-hand M2x0.40 metric coarse threads and is suited for use in a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, making it most effective in through-hole tapping operations where chip evacuation is straightforward. It is a practical choice for production tapping on ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces where consistent thread quality at the 6H tolerance class is needed.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or production tap for M2x0.40 metric coarse through-hole applications. Compatible with materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance tradespeople using appropriate tapping heads, tap handles, or CNC tapping cycles. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the hole axis before engagement to avoid tap breakage at this small diameter. Apply cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material before and during tapping. Power down and de-energize any machine tool before changing or inspecting the tap.
