The OSG 1981005 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in through-hole applications. It is manufactured from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that extends tool life and reduces friction during cutting. The tap features an M6x1.00 metric coarse thread profile, a 2-flute spiral point geometry, and a plug chamfer for progressive thread engagement. The 6H class of fit meets standard metric tolerance requirements for general-purpose threaded assemblies. With an overall length of 63.5 mm (approximately 2.5 inches) and a thread length of 1 inch, this tap is suited for controlled-depth through-hole tapping in production and maintenance environments.
The OSG 1981005 is intended for use in through-hole tapping operations where chips are pushed forward ahead of the tap rather than backed out. It is rated for use across a broad range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. This makes it a versatile choice for machine shops, maintenance facilities, and production lines requiring consistent M6 metric threads.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and tapping chucks accepting a 6.477 mm (0.255 inch) shank diameter with a 7.9375 mm square drive. Suitable for machine tapping and hand tapping applications requiring M6x1.00 metric coarse threads per standard metric tolerance specifications.
A licensed machinist or maintenance technician should install this tap using a properly sized tap holder or tapping chuck. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle or driver is aligned perpendicular to the hole before engaging the tap. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain thread quality. Disengage power and secure the workpiece before changing or inspecting taps.
