The OSG 1757908 is a spiral point tap designed for threading operations in tough ferrous and exotic materials. Manufactured from powdered metal and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), it delivers extended tool life in demanding applications. The plug chamfer style provides a gradual lead-in for general through-hole tapping. With a 5/16-24 UNF thread form, H3 thread limit, and 3B class of fit, this tap produces consistent, tolerance-controlled threads suitable for precision fastener assemblies. Three flutes and a spiral point geometry push chips forward ahead of the tap, making it well suited for through-hole applications in production environments.
This tap is intended for use in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. It is commonly used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where right-hand, through-hole threading is required. The 5/16-24 UNF pitch makes it appropriate for fine-thread assemblies in aerospace, automotive, and general industrial fabrication. Coolant-through is not available on this tap, so external or flood coolant delivery should be used when threading heat-resistant alloys.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 5/16-24 UNF threads in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel workpieces.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists using a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or hand tap wrench. Ensure the spindle is properly aligned with the pre-drilled hole before beginning the tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage. Use appropriate cutting fluid or flood coolant — especially critical when threading stainless steel, titanium, or high-nickel alloys. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping between uses, as a dull or chipped tap in hard materials can seize or break in the workpiece.
