The OSG 1755708 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading M5x0.80 metric coarse holes in a wide range of ferrous materials. Ground from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a TICN (titanium carbonitride) coating, it delivers added surface hardness and lubricity compared to uncoated HSS taps. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. With a 45-degree helix angle and 3 right-hand flutes, chips are efficiently evacuated up and out of the hole during cutting. The 6H class of fit produces threads suitable for standard metric fastener assemblies. Overall length is 2-3/8 inches, and the tap is sized for use in standard tap holders and chucks for M5 tooling.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance tapping in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it the correct choice when thread depth must extend near the bottom of a blind hole. It is a single-operation tap, not a plug or taper starter, and is intended for use where the hole preparation and depth have already been confirmed. Series 343 is an OSG production-ground line commonly used in CNC machining centers and manual tapping operations alike.
Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Designed as an OEM-specification spiral flute tap in OSG Series 343, for use with standard M5 tap holders and machine tapping chucks accepting a 0.194-inch shank diameter.
Installation should be performed by a machinist or tooling professional familiar with tapping operations and workholding practices. Ensure the drilled hole meets the correct tap drill diameter and depth for M5x0.80 before threading. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel. Secure the workpiece fully before operation and confirm the tap holder runout is within acceptable limits to avoid tap breakage.
