The OSG 1746801 is a spiral flute bottoming tap designed for cutting internal 6-32 UNC right-hand threads in a variety of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The 45-degree helix angle and 3-flute spiral design evacuate chips back away from the cutting zone, making it well-suited for blind-hole tapping where chip clearance is critical. At 2 inches overall length with an 11/16-inch thread length, it fits standard tap handles and CNC toolholders for the 6-32 size range.
This bottoming tap is intended for finishing threads to the bottom of a blind hole where a plug or taper tap has already started the thread. It carries a 2B class of fit and H5 thread limit, suitable for general-purpose threaded assemblies requiring standard tolerance. Typical applications include threading small fastener holes in sheet metal, machined components, and structural assemblies across manufacturing, maintenance, and repair operations. It is used by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working with hand tap handles or machine tapping setups.
Designed for cutting 6-32 UNC 2B right-hand internal threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Not rated for coolant-through toolholders.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using the appropriate tap handle or machine tapping fixture for the 6-32 size. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and that a proper tapping fluid or cutting oil compatible with the workpiece material is applied before and during the operation. For blind holes, use a taper or plug tap to start the thread before advancing with this bottoming tap. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged tap can produce out-of-tolerance threads or break off in the hole.
