The OSG 1740405 is a spiral point plug tap designed for machine tapping through-holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction compared to uncoated alternatives. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the cutting action, keeping flutes clear and allowing higher feed rates in production environments. With a 10-24 UNC thread form, H3 thread limit, and 2B/3B class of fit, this tap meets standard fastener tolerance requirements for general mechanical assembly. It is suited for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads where consistent thread quality is required.
This tap is intended for right-hand threading of through-hole applications in materials including aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and cast iron. The TiN coating makes it particularly effective in production runs where abrasive materials accelerate wear on uncoated tooling. The 10-24 UNC size is commonly used in light mechanical assemblies, electronics enclosures, and sheet metal fabrication requiring machine-cut internal threads.
Designed as a standard spiral point plug tap for through-hole machine tapping in materials including aluminum, stainless steel, alloy steel, die steel, cast iron, and low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel. Compatible with standard straight-shank tap holders and quick-change tapping attachments accepting the appropriate shank diameter.
Spiral point taps should be installed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with tapping operations and cutting fluid selection for the workpiece material. Ensure the tap is properly aligned with the drilled pilot hole before engaging the spindle to avoid thread damage or tool breakage. Use the appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the material being tapped to maintain tool life. Power down and secure the machine before changing or inspecting the tap.
