The OSG 1739801 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in ferrous metals. It features a plug chamfer and three flutes, with a spiral point geometry that pushes chips ahead of the cut rather than packing them in the flute. This keeps the cutting zone clear during through-hole tapping operations. The tap is manufactured from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a steam oxide coating that provides light lubricity and corrosion resistance. With an overall length of 2 inches and a thread length of 0.688 inches, it fits standard tap holders and handles used in manual and machine tapping setups. Professional machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworkers are the typical users.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping in low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The 2B class of fit produces a standard commercial thread tolerance, appropriate for most fastener and threaded insert applications. The H3 thread limit designation indicates a controlled oversize ground tolerance, which helps account for workpiece spring-back in tougher materials. It is well suited for both hand tapping and CNC or manual machine tapping where chip ejection in through-holes is required.
Designed for use in ferrous material applications including low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Compatible with standard 6-32 UNC thread specifications and fits tap holders sized for a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with thread cutting operations. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pre-drilled pilot hole before beginning the cut. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel, to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life. Do not force the tap if resistance increases sharply, as this may indicate chip packing or misalignment.
