The OSG 1737501 is a spiral flute pipe tap designed for cutting 1/16-27 NPTF threads in a range of metals. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with an oxide finish, this tap delivers the hardness and wear resistance needed for production and maintenance tapping operations. The 15-degree helix angle drives chips up and out of the hole, making it well suited for through-hole and shallow blind-hole applications. Four flutes provide a strong cutting geometry balanced for control and chip evacuation. With an overall length of 2-1/8 inches and a shank diameter of 0.3125 inches, this tap fits standard tap holders used in machining centers and hand tapping setups.
This tap is intended for threading pipe fittings and fluid-system ports to the NPTF standard, which produces a pressure-tight mechanical seal without sealant when properly gauged. Typical applications include tapping ports in carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces found in hydraulic manifolds, pneumatic components, and plumbing fittings. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole compared to a standard taper chamfer, giving installers more usable thread length in tight-clearance situations. Series 318 classification places this tool within OSG's standard pipe tap line for trade and production use.
Designed for tapping 1/16-27 NPTF threads in carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Fits standard tap holders sized for a 0.3125-inch shank diameter.
This tap should be installed by a machinist or qualified technician using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC spindle with appropriate torque control. Secure the workpiece firmly and align the tap perpendicular to the drilled hole before beginning the cut. Apply cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel, to reduce heat and extend tool life. Do not reverse the tap under power without confirming the machine is programmed for rigid tapping to avoid breakage.
