The OSG 1733408 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 1/2-13 UNC holes in ferrous materials. It is manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel and features a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating that improves wear resistance and reduces galling in demanding applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard taper or plug tap. With a 45-degree helix angle and three right-hand flutes, this tap efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole, making it well suited for short-chipping and interrupted-cut materials. It carries an H3 thread limit and a 3B class of fit for standard tolerance threading.
This tap is intended for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. It is a production-grade tool used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in CNC tapping, manual tapping heads, and turret lathe applications. The modified bottoming geometry makes it a practical choice for blind-hole work where thread depth close to the bottom is required. The TiCN coating extends tool life in abrasive and work-hardening materials such as stainless steel. Coolant-through capability is not included in this tool.

This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist using a properly sized tap holder or collet chuck. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is aligned to the hole axis before engaging the tap to prevent breakage. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace at the first sign of degradation to avoid thread damage in the workpiece.
