The OSG 1731608 is a spiral point tap designed for right-hand threading in 5/8-11 UNC applications. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and heat tolerance compared to standard uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across the lead threads, making it well suited to through-hole tapping operations. With an H3 thread limit and a 3B class of fit, it produces threads within tight tolerance ranges required in precision mechanical assemblies. Overall length is 3.811 inches with a thread length of 1.137 inches and a shank diameter of 0.48 inches.
This tap is intended for use in through-hole tapping across a range of ferrous materials including low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the tap and out of the hole, reducing chip packing and making it a practical choice for production environments and job shop work where consistent thread quality is needed. It is suitable for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping setups. Coolant-through is not supported on this tap.
Designed as a direct-use spiral point tap for 5/8-11 UNC through-hole tapping in low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Part of OSG Series 300.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with threading operations. Before tapping, verify the pilot hole diameter matches the recommended drill size for 5/8-11 UNC to avoid tap breakage or out-of-tolerance threads. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel. Follow machine manufacturer guidelines for spindle speed and feed rate; do not force the tap or reverse without clearing chips.
