The OSG 1731605 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading through-holes in a wide range of ferrous materials. It cuts a 5/8-11 UNC thread to a 3B class of fit with an H3 thread limit, delivering consistent dimensional control in production and maintenance environments. Manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), it offers improved wear resistance and reduced friction compared to uncoated tooling. The three-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, making it well suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is used in ferrous metal fabrication, machine shops, and industrial maintenance for threading through-holes in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel workpieces. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in over several threads, which distributes cutting forces and reduces the risk of tap breakage during entry. It is appropriate for both CNC tapping centers and hand tapping operations where a controlled cutting action is required. The right-hand thread direction and standard UNC profile make it a straightforward drop-in for most 5/8-11 fixturing and assembly applications.
Designed for through-hole tapping in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. Compatible with standard tap holders and tapping heads accepting a 0.48-inch shank diameter. Suitable for use in both CNC tapping centers and manual tapping operations requiring a 5/8-11 UNC thread form.
Use in a properly aligned tap holder or tapping head to prevent side loading and tap breakage. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the through-hole pilot diameter is drilled to the correct size for a 5/8-11 UNC thread. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements during operation.
