The OSG 1730401 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting 10-24 UNC threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, this tap resists wear and runs cooler in production and maintenance applications. It features 3 flutes, a plug chamfer for partial-hole threading, and an H3 thread limit for consistent dimensional accuracy. The overall length is 2.374 inches with a thread length of 0.500 inches and a shank diameter of 0.194 inches. This is a right-hand tap in the OSG Series 300 line, sized and toleranced to a 2B/3B class of fit.
This tap is used in machine shop, maintenance, and fabrication environments where 10-24 UNC threads are required. The plug chamfer makes it suitable for through-holes and deeper blind holes where partial lead-in is acceptable. Typical materials include low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. It is not designed for coolant-through applications. Machinists, tool and die makers, and industrial maintenance technicians routinely use this tap in both manual and CNC tapping operations.
Rated for use in low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The H3 thread limit and 2B/3B class of fit make this tap compatible with standard 10-24 UNC tapped hole specifications across general industrial and maintenance applications.
This tap should be installed in a machine spindle or tap holder with appropriate torque control to prevent breakage, especially in harder materials like stainless or hardened steel. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 10-24 UNC thread before tapping. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping regularly, as a damaged tap can produce out-of-tolerance threads.
