The OSG 1716201 is a spiral flute STI tap designed for cutting Screw Thread Insert (STI) threads in a wide range of ferrous and high-performance materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap delivers consistent performance in demanding tapping applications. It features a 3-flute, right-hand spiral configuration with a 15-degree helix angle that promotes efficient chip evacuation up and out of the hole. The modified bottoming chamfer allows the tap to thread closer to the bottom of blind holes. The overall length is 2.125 inches, the shank diameter is 0.168 inches, and the thread length is 0.75 inches.
This tap is intended for STI thread production in materials including alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, stainless steel, and titanium. It is suited for use in machine shops, maintenance and repair operations, and production environments where STI inserts are required to restore or create strong internal threads. The H3 thread limit makes it appropriate for general-purpose tapping tolerances on 8-32 UNC threads. It belongs to OSG Series 315 and is sold individually.
Rated for use in alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, stainless steel, and titanium. Designed for STI tapping applications requiring 8-32 UNC thread form per OSG Series 315 specifications.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist following standard tapping procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is properly aligned before engaging the tap. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel, titanium, or high-nickel alloys. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping regularly, as powdered metal taps used in hardened materials are subject to accelerated edge wear under improper speeds or feeds.
