The OSG 1706501 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 8-32 UNC internal threads in demanding materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a steam oxide coating, this plug-chamfer tap drives chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, keeping the flutes clear during through-hole threading operations. It runs a 3-flute, right-hand configuration with an H3 thread limit and a 2B class of fit, making it suitable for standard tolerance fastener applications. Overall length is 2.126 inches with a thread length of 0.822 inches and a shank diameter of 0.168 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians rely on this tap for production and repair threading in tough alloys.
The OSG 1706501 is rated for use in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. These are among the most tool-aggressive materials encountered in aerospace, defense, medical device, and industrial maintenance applications. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in that distributes cutting forces across several threads, reducing the risk of tap breakage when entering pre-drilled through holes. The steam oxide surface treatment improves lubricity and helps resist galling when cutting sticky, work-hardening materials such as stainless steel and high-nickel alloys.
Designed for 8-32 UNC through-hole threading applications in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. Part of the OSG Series 312NI product line.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping operations. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pre-drilled hole before beginning the threading cycle. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped, particularly when working with stainless steel or high-nickel alloys. Power down or de-energize any machine spindle before manually loading or inspecting the tap.
