The OSG 1704501 is a spiral flute tap designed to cut 3/8-24 UNF right-hand internal threads in blind and shallow-bottom holes. Built from powdered metal with a steam oxide coating, it delivers controlled chip evacuation in difficult-to-machine materials. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a standard plug or taper tap. With a 15-degree helix angle and 3 flutes, it is well suited for production tapping in ferrous and high-strength alloys. Machinists and toolroom technicians use this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms where consistent thread quality is required.
The 1704501 is rated for use in alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. The steam oxide finish reduces friction and provides a degree of built-in lubricity, which supports performance in these demanding materials. The H5 thread limit designation indicates a tight tolerance class appropriate for precision threaded assemblies. This tap does not support coolant-through delivery, so external cutting fluid application is recommended when tapping in harder materials or at elevated cycle rates.
Designed for use in standard 3/8-24 UNF tapping applications across OSG Series 313. Compatible with conventional tapping chucks, synchronous tapping attachments, and rigid tapping setups on CNC machining centers and manual machines that accept straight-shank taps of the specified shank diameter.
Always secure the workpiece and ensure the spindle is properly aligned before tapping to avoid tap breakage. Power down and lock out the machine before changing taps or clearing chips. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly with stainless, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace at first signs of thread quality degradation.
