The OSG 1702501 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting right-hand metric coarse threads in a wide range of ferrous and high-strength materials. It carries an M6x1.00 thread profile with a 6H class of fit and a D5 thread limit, making it suitable for general-purpose tapping where consistent thread tolerance is required. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across the lead threads for clean entry into through-holes. Constructed from powdered metal with a steam oxide coating, the 1702501 offers improved chip ejection and resistance to built-up edge in tough alloys. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users.
This tap is rated for use in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. The steam oxide surface treatment reduces friction and improves lubricant retention, which is particularly useful in interrupted cuts and difficult-to-machine alloys. With a thread length of 1 inch (12 mm) and an overall length of 63.5 mm, it fits standard tap holders and CNC tapping chucks configured for M6 tooling. The three-flute spiral point design pushes chips ahead of the tap, making it best suited for through-hole applications rather than blind-hole work.
Rated for use in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. Part of OSG Series 344. Fits standard tap holders and CNC tapping attachments sized for M6 tooling with a 6.477 mm shank diameter.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom technicians using a calibrated tap holder, tapping head, or CNC machine with rigid or floating tap chuck. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole diameter matches the M6x1.00 tap drill specification before starting. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly important when tapping stainless steel or titanium. Do not reverse the tap under power without confirming the machine cycle is programmed for proper reversal to avoid tap breakage.
