The OSG 1663000317 is a helical flute thread mill designed for cutting 3/8-18 NPT internal threads in a single helical pass. Built from solid carbide and coated with OSG EgiAs finish, this tool delivers consistent thread form and extended tool life in demanding production environments. It features a 0.461-inch cutting diameter, a 0.611-inch length of cut, and a 0.500-inch shank diameter. With 5 right-hand flutes at 18 teeth per inch, it is suited for machinists and tool-and-die professionals running CNC milling operations that require accurate NPT thread generation without a dedicated tap.
This thread mill is applied in shops producing pipe-threaded ports, hydraulic fittings, pneumatic manifolds, and fluid-system components that call for NPT thread forms. The helical flute geometry and EgiAs coating make it appropriate for use in steel, stainless, aluminum, and similar materials where tool life and surface finish at the thread form are priorities. It is used in CNC machining centers where thread milling is preferred over tapping for accuracy, thread quality, or to reduce tool breakage risk in difficult materials. Series 16630 tools from OSG are designed for tight-tolerance production threading work.
Designed for CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation for thread milling operations requiring a 3/8-18 NPT thread form with a 0.500-inch shank tool holder.
Thread milling with this tool requires a CNC controller capable of helical interpolation; confirm G-code thread milling cycles are supported before programming. Secure the shank in a precision collet chuck or end mill holder rated for the 0.500-inch diameter to minimize runout. Verify spindle speed and feed rate settings against OSG Series 16630 cutting data recommendations for the specific workpiece material. Inspect the tool and holder for runout before the first cut, as excessive runout degrades thread quality and shortens tool life.
