The OSG 1650506208 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 9/16-24 UNEF holes to a 3B class of fit. Built from powdered metal with a TICN coating, this tap handles demanding materials including alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, cast iron, and aluminum alloys. The 45-degree right-hand helix angle drives chips up and out of the hole, making it well suited for blind-hole and semi-bottoming applications. Overall length is 3.937 inches with a thread length of 0.665 inches and a tapping depth of 50 millimeters. The H4 thread limit provides consistent tolerance control across production runs. Machinists and tool-room technicians select this tap for precision threading work where dimensional accuracy and tool life are both critical.
This tap is intended for use in CNC machining centers, manual knee mills, and drill presses where controlled tapping is possible. Its semi-bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole without fully bottoming out. The broad material compatibility makes it a practical choice for job shops working across mixed material types. The 3-flute spiral design with a 45-degree helix is particularly effective in gummy materials such as aluminum and low-carbon steel, where chip evacuation is essential to prevent tap breakage.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. Part of OSG Series 16505.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist using a tapping head, CNC rigid tap cycle, or floating tap holder appropriate for the machine type. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed and feed rate are set per the tap manufacturer's recommendations for the specific workpiece material. Apply appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound before starting. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, as a damaged tap can cause thread failures or breakage inside the workpiece.
