The OSG 1635005084 is a thread forming tap designed for M5x0.80 metric coarse threading in a wide range of metallic materials. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating for extended tool life and reduced friction in demanding materials. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 2.756 inches (70 mm) with a thread length of 0.378 inches (9.6 mm) and a tapping depth of 0.984 inches (25 mm). It carries a 4H class of fit with a D4 thread limit. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals install this tap in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms.
The 1635005084 is suited for both blind hole and through-hole threading applications across a broad spectrum of workpiece materials. Verified material applications include aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. The TiCN coating provides a hard, low-friction surface layer that is especially beneficial when tapping stainless steel and high-nickel alloys where heat and galling are primary tool failure causes. This tap is part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF series, engineered for production threading environments where thread quality and tool longevity are critical.
Designed for M5x0.80 metric coarse thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16350.
Thread forming taps require a dedicated forming tap drill size — use the correct pre-drill diameter for M5x0.80 forming taps, as the hole size differs from cutting tap requirements. Proper cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate to the workpiece material must be applied to prevent galling and premature tool wear. Always confirm spindle speed and feed rate are set per the material and tap manufacturer recommendations before engaging the tap. Thread forming taps are not interchangeable with cut-thread taps in the same pre-drilled hole without re-drilling to the correct forming tap pilot diameter.
