The OSG 1635005055 is a thread forming tap designed for M5x0.50 Metric Fine threading applications, featuring a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap is engineered for both blind hole and through-hole threading in demanding materials. It carries a 6H class of fit and a D5 thread limit. Overall length is 2.756 inches (70 mm), with a thread length of 0.378 inches (9.60 mm) and a tapping depth of 0.984 inches (25.00 mm). Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16350, it is sold individually.
This tap is suited for machine tapping operations in production and job-shop environments where tight thread tolerances and difficult workpiece materials are common. The modified bottoming configuration allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Applicable material groups include aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium, covering ISO material application codes P, M, N, and H. It is typically used in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and tapping machines by machinists and tool and die professionals.
Designed for blind hole and through-hole threading of M5x0.50 Metric Fine threads across ISO material application groups P, M, N, and H. Suitable for use in CNC and manual tapping setups requiring 6H tolerance class output.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist familiar with thread forming (cold forming) tap requirements, which differ from cutting taps in that they displace rather than cut material. Confirm that the workpiece pilot hole diameter matches the recommended form tap drill size for M5x0.50 before proceeding. Ensure the machine spindle is properly aligned and that appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil is applied for the workpiece material. Never reverse a thread forming tap under power without confirming the machine cycle is programmed for correct reverse feed.
