The OSG 1635003055 is a thread forming tap designed for M3x0.50 Metric Coarse applications, manufactured from cobalt steel with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap features a Modified Bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, making it suitable for threading closer to the bottom of blind holes. It carries a 6H class of fit and a D5 thread limit. Overall length is 2.2047 inches (56 mm), with a thread length of 0.2362 inches (6 mm) and a tapping depth of 0.7087 inches (18 mm). Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16350, this tap is installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in precision manufacturing environments.
This tap is rated for use in a broad range of workpiece materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium. It supports both blind hole and through-hole threading applications. The TiCN coating improves surface hardness and wear resistance, extending tool life in abrasive or high-strength materials. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes where a standard bottoming chamfer may not seat fully. Typical applications include precision component manufacturing, aerospace, and tooling fabrication where thread integrity and dimensional accuracy are critical.
Designed for M3x0.50 Metric Coarse thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium workpieces. Suitable for both blind hole and through-hole threading operations. Material application codes: P, M, N, H.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming hole — the pilot hole diameter for form tapping differs from that used for cut tapping and must be referenced against the appropriate forming tap drill chart for the specific material and thread size. Power down and secure the workpiece before tool changes. Use the appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil recommended for the workpiece material to reduce forming forces and extend tool life. Installation and operation should follow shop safety practices and applicable machining standards.
