The OSG 1626000208 is a cobalt thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting chips. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material to produce threads, resulting in stronger thread forms with no chips to clear. This tap features a modified bottoming chamfer for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The overall length is 2.274 inches with a thread length of 0.261 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. It is used by machinists and manufacturing tradespeople working on precision threaded assemblies across a wide range of materials.
This tap is suited for both production and maintenance applications requiring strong, clean internal threads. The cobalt construction with a V-coating provides heat resistance and wear life when working with demanding materials including stainless steel, titanium, high-nickel alloys, hardened steel, alloy steel, die steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and cast aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading into shallow blind holes where a standard taper or plug chamfer cannot reach full thread depth.
Designed for use in materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. Part of OSG Series 16260.
Thread forming taps require higher torque than cutting taps and must be used with a suitable tapping fluid or lubricant matched to the workpiece material. Ensure proper alignment between the tap and the pre-drilled hole using a tapping fixture or CNC spindle to avoid tap breakage. The pre-drill hole size for thread forming taps is larger than for cutting taps — consult OSG Series 16260 specifications for the correct forming drill diameter before use. Always secure the workpiece firmly and use appropriate RPM for the material being tapped.
