The OSG 1625096127 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 9/16-12 UNC internal threads to a 3B class of fit. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, making them well-suited for ductile metals where a stronger, work-hardened thread form is required. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers increased hardness and heat resistance for demanding applications. The modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 4.33 inches with a thread length of 0.83 inches and a tapping depth of 1.97 inches. It carries a right-hand thread direction and an H7 thread limit.
This tap is rated for a broad range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It is appropriate for both blind hole and through-hole threading operations in production machining, maintenance, and repair environments. The EXOPRO XPF series design is oriented toward shops that require consistent thread quality across difficult-to-tap materials. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users for this type of tap.
Rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. Suitable for blind hole and through-hole threading operations. Material application codes P, M, N, and H are supported per the manufacturer specification.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size for the same thread — consult a thread forming drill chart before drilling. Use a tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material, especially when working with stainless steel or high-nickel alloys. Ensure the tap is driven at the correct RPM for the material and hole depth to avoid work hardening ahead of the tap. This tap is intended for use in a rigid tapping setup or a dedicated tapping machine; floating holders may reduce thread accuracy.
