The OSG 1625076148 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in a wide range of metallic materials. Unlike cutting taps, this tap displaces material rather than removing it, producing stronger threads with no chips to evacuate. It carries a 7/16-14 UNC thread form, a 2B class of fit, and an H8 thread limit. The modified bottoming chamfer — 2.5 to 3 threads — allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. The cobalt substrate provides thermal and wear resistance in demanding applications, and the TiCN coating further reduces friction and extends tool life in hard and abrasive materials. Overall length is 3.937 inches (100 mm) and thread length is 0.712 inches.
This tap is suited for blind hole and through-hole threading operations in machining centers, CNC lathes, and manual tapping setups. Material application covers aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium — spanning material application codes P, M, N, and H. It fits production environments where chip-free threading and thread strength are priorities, and where coolant-through tooling is not required.

Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size — not the standard cut-tap drill size — to achieve the correct minor diameter; consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts before drilling. Machine the pilot hole to the appropriate depth and tolerance before tapping. Set spindle speed and feed rate per OSG recommendations for the workpiece material; thread forming generates higher torque than cutting taps, so verify that the tapping head or machine spindle can handle the required torque. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material to protect the tool and the formed thread.
