The OSG 1625005403 is a thread forming tap designed for 5-40 UNC threading applications requiring a 3B class of fit. Built from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap is engineered for demanding materials including stainless steel, titanium, high-nickel alloys, hardened steel, and aluminum. It features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, making it well suited for blind hole and through-hole threading where thread engagement close to the bottom of the bore is required. The H3 thread limit ensures consistent pitch diameter control. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16250, this tap is a right-hand, non-coolant-through design with an overall length of 2.2047 inches (56 mm).
This tap is intended for use in metalworking and machining environments where cold-forming rather than cutting produces threads by displacing material. It is appropriate for blind hole and through-hole threading operations on ferrous and non-ferrous metals across a broad hardness range. Typical installations include production machining, tool and die work, and aerospace or industrial component manufacturing where thread quality and tap life in difficult materials are critical. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard cut tap pilot hole sizes — consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart before use. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material, particularly when working in stainless steel, titanium, or high-nickel alloys. Power down and secure the workpiece before tap engagement in manual setups. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine tool manufacturer guidelines when operating CNC or manual tapping equipment.
