The OSG 1625003483 is a thread forming tap designed for producing 3-48 UNC internal threads without cutting chips. It uses a modified bottoming chamfer with 2.5 to 3 chamfered threads, making it suited for blind hole and through-hole threading applications where chip evacuation is a concern. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap handles a wide range of workpiece materials including aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It carries an H3 thread limit and a 2B class of fit. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians use this tap in production and maintenance environments where thread quality and tool life are critical.
This tap is part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF Series 16250. It is suited for blind hole and through-hole threading in materials coded P, M, N, and H, covering carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, high-nickel alloys, and non-ferrous materials such as aluminum and cast aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole compared to standard taper or plug chamfers, which is useful in tight-tolerance fixturing and close-tolerance assembly work across aerospace, automotive, and general machining applications.
Designed for 3-48 UNC blind hole and through-hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, hardened steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Compatible with standard 3-48 UNC tap holders and tapping attachments sized for a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size, which differs from standard cut tap drill sizes — consult published forming tap drill charts before machining. Secure the workpiece and use appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel and high-nickel alloys. Power down CNC equipment or tapping machines before changing tooling and confirm holder runout is within acceptable limits. This tap is intended for use by qualified machinists familiar with tapping speeds and feeds for the applicable workpiece material.
