The OSG 1605038167 is a thread forming tap designed for producing internal threads without cutting, using material displacement to create stronger, chip-free threads. Part of the EXOPRO XPF-OIL series, it is built from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for improved wear resistance and lubricity under demanding conditions. The tap is configured with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, making it well suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes. The overall length is 3.937 inches (100 mm), with a thread length of 0.626 inches (16 mm) and a maximum tapping depth of 1.575 inches (40 mm). It is sized for 3/8-16 UNC threads at a 2B class of fit with an H7 thread limit. Installed by machinists and maintenance technicians working in production or toolroom environments.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The coolant-through design supports high-speed tapping operations where through-spindle coolant or oil is available, helping to manage heat and extend tool life in difficult materials. It is appropriate for CNC machining centers, tapping machines, and rigid-tapping setups where consistent thread quality is required.
Designed for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, hardened steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium (material application codes P, M, K, N, H). Suitable for blind hole threading applications in CNC and rigid-tapping setups requiring 3/8-16 UNC internal threads.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut-tap pilot hole — consult the tap manufacturer's recommended forming drill chart before drilling. Use a rigid tapping setup or a synchronized tapping head to prevent thread distortion or tap breakage. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or ensure through-spindle coolant is active before engaging the tap. Always verify spindle RPM and feed rate are matched to the material and tap size per the manufacturer's recommended parameters.
