The OSG 1605012138 is a thread forming tap designed for producing internal threads without cutting, displacing material to create stronger, chip-free threads. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, this tap handles demanding applications across a wide range of metals. It features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. The overall length is 4.331 inches (110 mm) and the thread length is 0.768 inches. Thread limit is H8, sized for 1/2-13 UNC with a 2B class of fit and right-hand thread direction. Coolant-through design supports high-speed production environments.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in both production shop and maintenance machining applications. It performs across a broad material range including aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. The OSG EXOPRO XPF-OIL series is engineered for shops running difficult-to-tap materials where chip evacuation is a concern and thread strength is critical. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working on precision blind-hole components will find this tap well suited to demanding tolerances.
Designed for blind hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. Material application codes: P, M, K, N, H. Part of the OSG EXOPRO XPF-OIL Series 16050.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which differs from standard cut-tap drill sizes — consult OSG or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct pre-drill diameter before use. Install in a rigid CNC tapping chuck or tension-compression holder rated for the required torque; avoid hand-tapping in production setups. Ensure coolant-through supply is active when using the internal coolant channel to prevent galling in stainless or high-nickel alloys. Always confirm spindle speed and feed rate match the workpiece material per the manufacturer cutting data before starting a production run.
