The OSG 1602307 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 7/16-20 UNF right-hand internal threads in production and maintenance applications. Built from high-speed steel with a nitride and oxide coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer distributes the cutting load across several leading threads, making it well suited for through-hole threading. With 4 flutes and an H3 thread limit, it produces threads within the tolerance class required for standard UNF fastener fits. Overall length is 3-5/32 inches and thread length is 1-7/16 inches.
This tap is rated for use in aluminum and cast iron workpieces, covering a wide range of common production materials encountered in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and fabrication environments. The straight flute geometry works best in these shorter-chipping materials where chip evacuation does not require a spiral flute. It is part of the OSG Series 101C product line and is sized for standard 7/16-20 UNF tapping applications in both manual and CNC machine setups.
Rated for use in aluminum and cast iron. Suitable for standard 7/16-20 UNF through-hole tapping operations on manual machines, CNC machining centers, and drill presses equipped with appropriate tapping attachments.
Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pilot hole before starting. Use appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the material being threaded. On manual setups, advance the tap in short increments and periodically reverse to break chips. Always verify hole diameter against the recommended tap drill size for 7/16-20 UNF threads before beginning.
