The OSG 1601707 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 3/8-24 UNF internal threads in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a nitride and oxide coating, this tap delivers extended wear resistance and reduced friction during cutting operations. The plug chamfer style distributes cutting load gradually over the leading threads, making it well suited for through-hole threading applications. With 4 flutes and an H3 thread limit, the 1601707 holds tight tolerance control appropriate for a 3B class of fit. This tap is sized at 2-15/16 inches overall length with a thread length of 1-1/4 inches.
This tap is intended for use in machine shop, maintenance, and production threading operations on aluminum and cast iron workpieces. The straight flute design works best in through-hole applications where chips can clear freely from the cutting zone. It is suited to CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines operating at appropriate speeds for HSS tooling. Machinists, tool and die workers, and maintenance technicians working with fine unified threads in light-metal and gray iron components will find this tap compatible with standard toolholding setups.
Designed for threading aluminum and cast iron workpieces requiring a 3/8-24 UNF internal thread to a 3B class of fit. Part of the OSG 101C series of standard straight flute taps.
This tap should be installed in a properly sized tap holder or floating tap chuck to minimize axial misalignment. Always ensure the spindle and workpiece are securely fixtured before beginning the threading cycle. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material - sulfurized oil for cast iron and a light cutting fluid or lubricant for aluminum. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged tap can destroy thread form and seize in the hole.
