The OSG 1415004808 is a thread forming tap in the EXOTAP VP-NRT series, designed for cold-forming internal threads without cutting or removing material. Operating on the principle of plastic deformation, it produces stronger, burr-free threads compared to cut taps. Built from powdered metal high-speed steel (PM-HSS) with a TiCN coating, this tap offers high wear resistance and heat tolerance in demanding production environments. It is configured as a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, making it well-suited for blind hole applications where thread depth must reach close to the bottom of the bore. Licensed machinists and tool and die professionals are the primary installers.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The M10x1.25 metric fine thread specification and right-hand thread direction make it a common choice in automotive, aerospace, and precision machining applications where fine-pitch threads are required for tight tolerances and vibration resistance. The overall length of 2.913 inches (74.60 mm) and tapping depth of 1.252 inches (31.80 mm) are appropriate for standard CNC tapping and hand tapping operations.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P, M, and N confirm suitability across these material groups. Compatible with standard CNC machining centers and tapping heads that accept the 9.68 mm shank diameter and 7.26 mm square drive.
Thread forming taps require a larger pilot hole diameter than cut taps - always consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart for the correct pre-drill size before tapping. Secure the workpiece and verify spindle alignment before starting to prevent tap breakage, particularly in hardened steel. Use a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tap life. Do not reverse the tap until the full tapping depth has been reached in blind holes to avoid thread distortion.
