The OSG 1410109408 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting or removing material. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14101, this tap features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. Constructed from cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for improved wear resistance and heat tolerance, it handles demanding tapping applications in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, die steel, and hardened steel. The right-hand thread configuration follows the M6x1.00 Metric Coarse standard.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in production and job-shop environments across machining, fabrication, and toolroom applications. The D10 thread limit makes it appropriate for general-purpose metric tapping where controlled fit and thread quality are required. Machinists and toolmakers working with harder ferrous and non-ferrous materials will find the cobalt construction and TiCN coating effective for extending tool life under elevated cutting temperatures. It is sold individually and compatible with standard tapping chucks and holders accepting a 0.255-inch shank diameter.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material Application Codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per ISO classifications.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — use the recommended forming tap drill diameter for M6x1.00 to achieve correct thread engagement. Ensure the tapping machine or CNC spindle is set to the correct synchronous feed rate matching the thread pitch to avoid tap breakage. Apply appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material before tapping. Always verify hole depth exceeds the required tapping depth to avoid bottoming the tap against the hole floor.
