The OSG 1410108700 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile and machinable metals without cutting or producing chips. Built from cobalt high speed steel with a TiCN coating, this tap generates threads by displacing material rather than removing it, resulting in stronger thread forms and longer tool life compared to cut taps. It carries an M5x0.80 metric thread specification, a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, and a D8 thread limit tolerance. Overall length is 60.30 mm (approximately 2.37 inches) with a 10.00 mm (0.39 inches) thread length. It is part of OSG Series 14101 and marketed under the HY-PRO NRT trade name.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading applications across a wide range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, die steel, and hardened steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes, making it practical for tight-tolerance machined components in production and job-shop environments. It is installed using standard tapping machines, CNC machining centers, or manual tap wrenches with a right-hand thread direction. The shank diameter is 4.93 mm (0.19 inches) with a 3.86 mm square drive.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous metals per ISO material group designations.
Thread forming taps require the correct pilot hole diameter for the specific thread size and material to achieve proper thread form and avoid tap breakage. Tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material should be applied before and during tapping. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole. This tool is intended for use by machinists and tooling technicians operating manual or CNC tapping equipment.
