The OSG 1410106900 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading applications in metals. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT Series 14101, it carries an M3x0.50 metric thread size with a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads, allowing it to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. The tap is manufactured from cobalt high speed steel for enhanced heat and wear resistance and is TiCN coated to extend tool life in demanding materials. Overall length is 49.20 mm (1.929 inches) with a thread length of 6.20 mm (0.244 inches). A Thread Limit of D4 is specified. This tool is installed by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working with precision threaded assemblies.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in a range of metals including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it well-suited for applications where thread engagement must begin as close to the bottom of the hole as possible. The cobalt substrate and TiCN coating combination provides durability in interrupted cuts and in materials that generate high cutting heat. It operates as a right-hand thread forming tool, meaning no chip evacuation is required since material is displaced rather than cut.
Designed for blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces requiring an M3x0.50 metric right-hand thread form. Material Application Codes P and N apply per the input data.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole — consult the appropriate forming tap drill chart for the M3x0.50 thread form, as the pilot hole diameter differs from cutting tap specifications. Use a compatible tapping fluid or cutting oil appropriate for the workpiece material; stainless steel and hardened steel typically require a heavier-duty lubricant. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole before applying torque. Always de-energize or lock out any power tapping equipment before changing tooling.
