The OSG 1410105701 is a thread forming tap designed for M12x1.75 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove chips, producing stronger threads with a better surface finish. Manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles demanding materials without sacrificing tool life. The modified bottoming chamfer — with 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads — allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Class of fit is 6H with a D11 thread limit, meeting standard metric tolerance requirements for machine and structural assemblies.
This tap is suited for production and job-shop environments where blind hole threading in tough materials is routine. The cobalt construction and steam oxide finish make it appropriate for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The right-hand thread direction and standard shank geometry are compatible with CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads. It belongs to the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is engineered specifically for roll forming in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Designed for blind hole thread forming in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per ISO classification.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — use the recommended drill size for M12x1.75 roll forming, which differs from a standard cut tap drill chart. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil rated for the workpiece material before and during the tapping operation. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the bore before engaging the spindle. On manual setups, use a calibrated torque-limiting tapping handle to avoid tool breakage, especially in harder steels.
