The OSG 1410104508 is a thread forming tap designed for M8x1.25 metric coarse threading in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is manufactured from cobalt high-speed steel and carries a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and tool life at elevated temperatures. With a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 2.5 threads, it starts threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.7165 inches with a usable thread length of 0.5906 inches. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series and is intended for use by machinists and toolroom professionals in production and job-shop environments.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes in a broad range of metallic workpieces including alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it the right choice when thread engagement must begin as close to the hole bottom as possible. A right-hand thread direction and 6H class of fit make it compatible with standard M8x1.25 metric fastener assemblies. It is appropriate for both manual tapping operations and CNC machine tapping with rigid tap holders.
Designed for M8x1.25 metric coarse blind hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Material application codes P and N confirm suitability for steel and non-ferrous material groups per ISO designation.
Thread forming taps require a precisely sized forming hole — consult OSG HY-PRO NRT series recommendations or standard forming tap drill charts for the correct pre-drill diameter before use, as this differs from a standard cutting tap drill size. Power down or lock out all machine motion before changing tooling. Use an appropriate tapping compound or cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material to reduce forming torque and protect the tap. Ensure the tap holder provides adequate axial float when used in CNC rigid tapping mode to prevent tap breakage.
