The OSG 1410104401 is a thread forming tap designed for M8x1.25 Metric Coarse applications. Unlike cutting taps, it cold-forms threads by displacing material rather than removing chips, making it well suited for blind hole threading where chip evacuation is a concern. Built from cobalt high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, the 1410104401 offers added heat resistance and lubricity. The modified bottoming chamfer - 2 to 2.5 chamfered threads - allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.7165 inches (69.10 mm) with a thread length of 0.5906 inches (15.00 mm). Right-hand thread direction. This tap is used by machinists and toolroom professionals in production and maintenance environments.
The 1410104401 is appropriate for blind hole threading operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It is sized for M8x1.25 threads with a class of fit of 4H and a thread limit of D5. Tapping depth reaches 0.5906 inches of usable thread with a maximum tapping depth of 1.1260 inches (28.60 mm). The shank diameter is 0.3180 inches (8.08 mm), compatible with standard tap holders sized for that shank. This is an OSG HY-PRO NRT Series tap, part of Series 14101, sold individually.

Thread forming taps require a specific forming tap drill size - do not use a standard cut-tap pilot drill, as the hole diameter is larger and critical to achieving correct thread form and fit. Power down or de-energize the machine and secure the workpiece before tap installation. Adequate lubrication is required during the forming operation; consult the material manufacturer or tap supplier for recommended cutting fluid. Inspect the tap for wear or deformation before each use, particularly after work in hardened or stainless steel.
